Analysing an Opening Scene to a film
• Sound:
• Sound
is very important within the first opening two minutes to help set the tone
mood and atmosphere.
• Non-diegetic
music is used to reflect the events such as the sad music which says all by myself.
• Diegetic
sound is used in the dialogue between the characters as the main character is
singing along with the song it reveals that she is relating with the song which
Is playing this shows that the genre is romatic comedy as she is singing along
to a song using a rolled up magazine as a microphone and she is alone and she
is looking for love
• Camera Angles:

There is a medium shot to show the audience what the
main actress looks like and shows what she is acting and what she is wearing
the is effective because it shows the audience what a mess she is at the beginning
• Characters:
• The main
characters are introduced in the opening scene when she is singing to along
with a song the audience recognises that they are the main characters through
the use of the events that they are involved in.
• Narrative Events:
• The opening
scene features certain narrative events such as she is on her own eating junk
food and in bed clothes watching TV. These conform to the genre as other
openings such as feature similar events Notting hill
• Enigma codes:
• Enigma
codes are used to tease the audience and engage them in the narrative so they
carry on watching the film. Certain enigmas are included in the opening such as
puzzles about her being on her own and the audience wants to know her story and
what happened or what’s is going to happening.
• The
audience want to know what will happen to the character as at the start she is
on her own and maybe the audience are wondering will she find love all will she
be at the same place as she was at the start
• Symbolic codes are shown in the
mise-en-scene:
• In the
opening the audience would identify symbols such as she is on her own in the
dark eating junk food these could make the audience think that the main actress
is depressed and looking for love
• Props/ costumes:
• The
audience can see that the character is wearing bed clothes this shows that she
is all alone and she doesn’t have any company this is typical of the genre
because it shows that a girl is upset about some think
• Clichés:
• Noticeable
clichés are used in the opening scene such as eating junk food and being usetthis
engages the audience as they recognise these features and can predict what is
going to happen in the narrative.
